The capital city Hanoi surpassed Kuala Lumpur, Taipei and Kyoto to be honored as Asia’s best emerging culinary city at this year’s World Culinary Awards.

The results were based on votes cast by culinary industry professionals and the public, with the nominee gaining the most votes named the winner, the organizing board said at a ceremony last week.

Hanoi recently has emerged on the global tourism map as three of Vietnam’s first four Michelin-starred restaurants are in the capital.

Last June, Hibana by Koki Restaurant inside Capella Hotel, Tam Vi Restaurant and Gia Restaurant were awarded a one-star rating by the Michelin Guide for the first time, besides Anan Saigon Restaurant in HCMC.

The World Culinary Awards is the sister event of the World Travel Awards, which was launched in 1993 to acknowledge excellence in the travel and tourism industry. It has been described as the “travel industry’s Oscars.”

Bangkok was named Asia’s best culinary city.

Earlier this year, Hanoi was voted one of the world’s top 20 food destinations for 2023 by Tripadvisor readers.

Signature dishes that have contributed to Hanoi cuisine’s reputation included bun cha (char-grilled pork with rice noodles), cha ca (fried catfish) and egg coffee.
